In Diriyah Race Two, Maserati MSG Racing Competes For The Top 10

Edoardo Mortara, driving for Maserati MSG Racing, battled for a top 10 finish in the 2023 Diriyah E-Prix rematch at the Riyadh Street Circuit. After a difficult first race at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Monegasque brand rebounded and gained momentum in qualifying the next day. Max Günther, another member of Edo’s squad, also started from Group B, but Edo finished in the top four and moved on to the quarterfinals while Max fell just short of the matches. The Swiss-Italian competitor here competed against Mitch Evans of Jaguar and finished eighth in qualifying after falling to the Kiwi in a one-lap battle. Max came in at number ten in the end.

Both drivers made gains early in the 39-lap race; Max claimed ninth position after passing Stoffel Vandoorne on lap nine, while Edo advanced to sixth on the opening lap. The pair soon fell into a steady pace, albeit Edo lost his lead on lap 21 when Jake Dennis and Sam Bird passed him. The team’s original strategy was derailed by a safety car on lap 27, which was brought about by a collision with Nico Müller. A return to the green flag on lap 31 resulted in a 10-turn drive to the finish line.

While using both assault strategies, Edo and Max sadly fell out of the top five on the last lap, finishing ninth and nineteenth, respectively. On February 11, the first race in Hyderabad, India, will mark the start of the ninth season of the FIA Formula E World Championship.

Maserati MSG Racing team principal James Rossiter “Although we are still far from where we want to be, it is wonderful to put some points on the board after a challenging weekend. Our performance today depended heavily on qualifying, and Edo was excellent on the first lap, grabbing fifth place after starting from ninth. Max also did a fantastic job of catching up and was in the running the whole time. Early on, we were able to keep up a solid pace with the leads, but since there were so many players, it was quite difficult to schedule when the assault mode would activate. Unfortunately, the increased speed made it impossible to make any progress as the safety vehicle added to the difficulty of the scenario. Everyone on the team had a challenging two days, but I am really impressed with how well they all worked together. This past weekend, we made significant progress, and if we keep working, we will.”

Maserati MSG Motorsport One of the first teams in the FIA Formula E World Championship, Maserati MSG Racing joined the most significant all-electric vehicle class in racing as the first manufacturer in December 2013. Since the series’ first season in 2014–2015, MSG Racing has been one of the few consistent competitors. Edoardo Mortara gave the team its first taste of runner-up glory in 2021, and the squad had its most successful season in 2022 when it placed second among the teams.
